Kwara United men’s volleyball club trounced Caliphate Spikers of Sokoto by 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-21), on Monday, as the National Volleyball Division 1 tournament got underway at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.
In the second match of the day, Katsina United came from behind to defeat Oyo state 3-1. (19-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-20) in the tournament that is featuring 10 teams comprising eight male and two female clubs.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the chairman of the technical committee for the tournament, Martin Melindi, as saying that although many teams indicated interest in participating in the competition,” but only ten teams were registered for various reasons”.
Melindi said the tournament, in which the male teams would be competing on a round robin basis, is to end on May 30.
“When you participate in the first phase and fail to attend the second phase, before you will be readmitted, you will have to pay N200,000. So I urged all the teams to endeavor to finish the league,” he said.
Musa Nimrod, Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, also urged the players to be focused on the game, stating that it was his desire to see volleyball clubs grow at the grassroots.
Ahmed Hassan, Chairman, Referees’ committee, disclosed that FIDE rules would be applied in the competition.
“Issuance of cards for delayed is not just for a player, but also applicable to the team.
“Coaches are not allowed to talk to referees, but should lay their complaints through their team captain,” he added. (NAN)
