Nigeria’s Super Falcons will feature in a four-nation tournament in the United States in June, a statement by Ademola Olajire, Head of Communications Department, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has said.
Olajire said, on Thursday, that the Falcons will join Jamaica, Portugal and host, U.S, at the event, which will be featured at the BBVA Stadium in Houston and the brand-new $240million Q2 Stadium in Austin built by the newest club in the Major League Soccer, Austin FC”.
“Both cities are in the state of Texas and the clash between the Super Falcons and the US Women team will be the first-ever football match at the state-of-the-art Q2 stadium,” Olajire said.
The tournament, scheduled for June 10 to June 16, will see Falcons face Jamaica on the opening day of the event before taking on Portugal three days later at the BBVA Stadium.
The last match of the Falcons, nine-time African champions, would be against the U.S. squad at the Q2 Stadium on June 16, and it would mark the first time the two teams would be facing each other outside of a world championship.
The game would, however, be the third-ever friendly the four-time winners of the FIFA World Cup would play against an African country, with the previous two encounters coming against South Africa.
Meanwhile, American Randy Waldrum, Coach of the Super Falcons, has expressed his excitement about the tournament.
“The Summer Series is an interesting event and the teams featuring are of very high quality.
“It is a great prospect for us, as we continue to build ahead of the qualifying games for next year’s Women Africa Cup of Nations,” Waldrum said. (NAN)
