Stop suffering in silence, Nigeria Players Union tells professional footballers

By Daily Sports on May 3, 2016

The Nigeria Players Union, National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF) has advised all professional footballers in the country’s leagues to inform NANPF officials in their states on challenges they face regarding their welfare, especially on the issue of non-payment of salaries and other entitlements due them.

Advising the players not to die in silence, NANPF said in a statement issued in Lagos and signed by the General Secretary, Comrade Austin Popo: “The union can only work with the information at its disposal regarding issues affecting their welfare and career. The NANPF is worried that players and coaches of some professional clubs in the NPFL have kept quiet, and suffering in silence over issues of non-payment of salaries for over five months. We are equally aware that most of the affected players are afraid to speak out regarding their plight due to fear of being victimised by club officials.

“The union wishes to assure the players of their protection and crave for their solidarity in the ongoing moves by the union backed by the Trade Union Congress to recover monies owed their colleagues who have worked so hard to lay the foundation of the structures of the clubs they are currently engaged. Wisdom demands they support the union when such request is being made, because there is no guarantee that they cannot be in same situation tomorrow just as their colleagues.”
