The Edo Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, on Tuesday in Benin urged the Edo Queens to strive hard to return to the top of the 2020/2021 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Shaibu gave the charge when he visited the team before their departure for their NWFL Week 8 match against the Delta Queens FC.
He said the players needed to intensify their efforts as they have now renewed their rivalry with the Delta Queens FC.
“I will be thrilled to see Edo Queens return to the top of NWFL table, and I advise the players to be aggressive in their play, particularly when attacking the opponents’ goal area,” Shaibu advised the Benin-based state-owned women football clubside.
While maintaining that the beauty of the game remained goalscoring, the deputy governor said government had done so much for the team.
“The only way to reciprocate is for the team to keep winning. That way, government will be motivated to do more.
“But, girls, you are all doing very well. I commend your collective and individual efforts, but I want you all to intensity your efforts.
“I will be more thrilled if we can be scoring goals in all our matches because number of goals scored at the end of the league will go a long way in determining who wins what.
“So, I need you girls to have this at the back of your minds. Remember too that our target is playing at the continental level and we must all work hard to achieve it,” he stated.
NAN reports that Edo Queens FC currently occupy the third position on the NWFL table with 14 points from 7 matches.
Delta Queens will play host to Edo Queens on Wednesday in Agbor on match day 8.
Edo Queens have played 7 matches, winning four, drawing two and losing one.
The Benin-based team had previously occupied the top spot of the table before they were displaced. (NAN)
