Rangers International FC of Enugu on Wednesday defeated Ifeanyiubah FC of Nnewi by 2-1 in Enugu and climb to 2nd on the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) table.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) climbed to the 2nd behind Rivers United of Port Harcourt after four matches played in the ongoing NPFL with level on 9 points but on goal difference of two.
Rangers FC started the match on a good note by forcing Ifeanyiubah FC goalkeeper Sharp Uzoigwe on quick two saves.
Israel Abia put the home team in front in the 12th minute from a penalty kick and Ekene Awazie leveled the scores for Ifeanyiubah FC in the 51st minute.
Shedrack Asoegbu made it 2-1 for Rangers FC in 56th minute and it turned out to be the match winning goal.
Addressing the media after the match, Rangers FC Coach, Salisu Yusuf praised the players for playing to instruction.
Yusuf acknowledged that the visitors gave his players tough time and made game difficult for his players.
Ifeanyiubah came on us with determination but we were able to subdue them because the players needed the points to be in better position on the log.
The coach gave credit to the visiting team goalkeeper saying that he was his team’s main competitor on the day.
Ifeanyiubah FC coach, Uche Okagbue, said that his team fought like a wounded lion but lost concentration after the equalising goal.
The coach noted that he was beginning to be worried of his team winless streak in the ongoing league.
“We changed tactics after the second 45 minute and that was what fetched us the equalising goal.
“Had it been we won Rangers FC, the players would have regained confidence for the forthcoming matches.
“As it stands now, we are going home to work more on our playing tactics to ensure we turn the fortune around,” he said.
