The organisers of Nigeria’s biggest football competition, The Governor’s Cup, have congratulated the immediate past Governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson, and former State Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party, Moses Cleopas, on their landslide victory at the Senatorial Bye Election, held on Saturday, December 5.
Both candidates contested under the umbrella party, the PDP, and were declared winners after a landslide victory in their respective Senatorial Districts.
In a statement issued in Yenagoa on Tuesday, Director General of the competition, Ono K. Akpe, on behalf of the organisers, said their victory was well deserved, following their antecedents and giant strides achieved in their various fields of endeavor.
Akpe stressed that former Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson, would bring his wide experience of lawmaking and governance to bear, following his stint at the House of Representatives, when he represented Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency as well as his meritorious eight-year service as Governor of Bayelsa State.
He added that Bayelsa West, the state, the Niger Delta and the Ijaw Nation in general, will be uplifted through his vocal strength, since his passion for the Niger Delta cannot be quantified.
The Director General expressed optimism, that Dickson, who initiated Seriake Dickson Football Competition/Governor’s Cup, Wrestling, Swimming, Golf, Polo and other sporting events during his time as Governor, would continue with his legacies, as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
He appealed to them to use their respective offices to support sports development and youth empowerment not only in the region but in the country at large.
“The Youths of the Niger Delta and indeed Nigeria are blessed with abundant talents in all fields, we must give them maximum support in order for them to excel globally,” he concluded.
It would be recalled that the Restoration Cup/Bayelsa Governor’s Cup is the largest grassroots/ community football tournament in the country hosting over 150 community teams. A select team of the 2019 edition, Restoration Starlets, went on to win a bronze medal at the African Youth Cup in Cape Verde and the Bayelsa League Cup through the able support of the immediate past Governor.
