Ex-Milan boss: Muntari Incident Changed Our History

By Daily sports on November 26, 2020

Former AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has argued that a goal from Ghanaian Sulley Muntari which was incorrectly not awarded changed the course of the club’s history.

Muntari’s header in a Serie A clash at home to Juventus in early 2012 clearly crossed the line before it was scooped away by Gianluigi Buffon, but the goal was not awarded (see it in the YouTube video below).

Had VAR or goal-line technology been present, Milan would have gone 2-0 up and likely gone on to win the game and possibly a second successive Scudetto.

Instead, Juventus fought back to draw 1-1 and ultimately claimed the title that season, sparking a run of dominance which has yet to be broken (the Bianconeri have claimed nine straight championships!).

Galliani argues that Milan’s downward spiral (from which they have only now recovered, putting together a strong showing through 2020 which currently sees them top of Serie A) started with that incident featuring Muntari.

“The real regret is the very regular goal not given to Muntari. We would have won the second consecutive Scudetto, our history would have changed,” he is quoted by Football Ghana.

“If we had won the Scudetto we would not have sold [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva, two who still make the difference today. We could have started again with the fourth great Milan and I would have closed the purchase of [Carlos] Tevez.

“If it had gone as I say maybe we wouldn’t have sold and maybe today we would still be there. Instead the Argentine went to Juve, who with him won three league titles in a row.” (African Football)
