Arsenal’s Nigerian-born Tim Akinola says he is looking to carve out his own path, as he elegantly rejects comparisons to some of the game’s best defensive midfielders.
The 19-year-old signed with the Gunners last month after he parted ways with Huddersfield Town, and he is expected to be on the fringes of manager Mikel Arteta’s first team through the 2020-21 season.
Akinola’s style of play is reported to be similar to that of Chelsea and France maestro N’Golo Kante, but the teenager insists he wants to establish his own football identity.
“I get compared to the likes of Kante and few others defensive midfielders but I don’t like comparing myself to other players,” he is quoted by All Nigeria Soccer.
“I do study so many types of midfielders to see their best bits and add it on to my game as I want to become the best centre midfielder.”
He added, “Truly my targets are to make my Premier League debut this season, coming and make a name for myself. I want to become the best midfielder in this generation, simple and clear.”
Akinola is eligible to represent both Nigeria and England at international level, though his focus will be on appearing in the Premier League, with a new season of England’s top flight getting underway this coming weekend. (African Football)
