Objective observers within and outside Nigeria would agree that what is currently happening in Nigeria’s political terrain calls for mourning for a once upon a time beloved country.
Once of such incidents, more like the icing on the rotten cake, happened when Buhari on Friday endorsed the violence and desperate wish of much discredited Adams Oshiomhole to impose Osagie Ize-Iyamu on the people of Edo State come September 29, Guber poll.
Buhari also brazenly gave his party, the APC, the license to grab the State by all means, whether hook or crook. The President's statement alone signals what is expected before, during and even after the election which from the look of things could pass easily at the end of the day as a hollow ritual.
However, as this page was preparing to go to bed, the League Management Committee announced the clubs that would represent Nigeria in next Africa Championships. Plateau United and Enyimba will go for CAF Champions League and Rivers United would compete in the second tie continental competition, CAF Confederation Cup.
Daily Sports team salutes the rectification of the Nigeria Professional League by League Management Committee and the Nigeria Football Federation going forward.
This stand would no doubt strengthen the resolve of the concerned club sides to start preparations in earnest for the African challenge which without prevarication is enormous.
It would also give the managements of Plateau United, Enyimba International and Rivers United the drive to go all out to recruit first rate legs to strengthen their teams as African club championships have proved to be hard nuts to crack right from the preliminary stages to the finals. The clubs need no soothsayer to vividly acknowledge such that the survival of the fittest stance of the competitions are no longer in doubt.
Let me also say here that the various State governments that have these teams must also brace up decisively to fully and unconditionally support their teams from start to finish. They must ensure that funds are released to get additional fresh and grade A legs that would beef up the teams to make them compliant for the African continent football club championship. It is an open secret that the competition has transformed to highly competitive football summit where only the best clubs that would withstand not only the test of time but the fireworks that attain it survives and Nigerian clubs would not afford less or crumbling or crashing out in the prelims or early stages.
Enyimba International FC not only as two – time champs but also veteran in the championship knows better. We will as usual keep our numerous fans in this column and the entire digital newspaper posted as we congratulate the critical stakeholders that made this year’s NPFL conclusive. We look forward to blissful start of the new season.
As the country or the citizenry was saddened by the over heating of the polity by Oshiomhole and his fellow political jobbers last week, there came a great relief from the World football governing body when Nigeria’s flagship team the Super Eagles was adjudged the 19th most valuable team in the World.
To be honest with you, yours truly in sports heaved a sigh of relieve when the news broke and on logging into www.dailysportsng.com, the news was already hung confirmed.
I breathed fresh air than the choking political air coming from Edo State. It was cheering and welcomed and again provided the needed leveler and great glimmer of hope for the beleaguered citizenry.
We can readily say that sports have provided great relief and ensured the fragile unity that binds the citizens together. Super Eagles team has done well. The technical hand, Gernot Rohr who is overseeing the team is doing a great job and one would not fail to acknowledge that. As we enter the next phase of the team’s rebuilding and building process, we salute the NFF executive board led by Pinnick Amaju for the encouragement and support so far that placed the Super Eagles in the 19th position as one of the valuable teams.
One would appeal that this fate should not in any way enter the head of the Nigerian side, rather it should spur them to greater heights in World football as the globe awaits the resumption of football activities.
All hands must be on desk by all and sundry as we congratulate the Eagles and their crew.
Our social media handles are on 24/7. Let's do the discussions as usual. Keep shooting hard till next week!!
