Rivers United Coach: We Will Be Better In CAFCL

By Daily Sports on July 17, 2020

Rivers United coach Stanley Eguma says the team will approach their next appearance in the CAF Champions League differently and attempt to achieve a better result.

Rivers are set to represent Nigeria in the 2020-21 edition of the continental tournament alongside Plateau United – after the country’s top flight league ended their season on a points-per-game basis – and this will mark their second appearance in the Champions League.

The Port Harcourt side first appeared in the premier African club compensation in 2017: they crushed Mali’s Real Bamako 4-0 on aggregate in the preliminary round, but were ousted in the next stage by Sudan’s Al Merrikh. Rivers won the first leg 3-0 at home, but were thumped 4-0 in the return game in Omdurman.

Learning from this past experience, Eguma believes his team will perform better in 2020-21.

“Rivers United is prepared to do better in next season’s CAF Champions League,” Eguma told Brila.net.

“We have been there before but we didn’t do well, but this time around we are going to do better because we have learnt our lessons.”

The 2020-21 edition of the Champions League will only begin after the current tournament is completed, with the semifinals and final set to be played in September. (African Football)
