Probe N2.7bn All Africa Games and Rio 2016 Olympics funds, SWAN urges FG

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), FCT chapter has called on the Federal Government to compel officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC) to account for the N2.7 billion that was approved by the Federal Government for the participation of Team Nigeria at the last All Africa Games, as well as preparation for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

SWAN in a statement issued after its congress in Abuja, noted that the probe has become imminent following the NSC complains of lack of fund to sponsor Nigerian athletes to qualifying championships ahead of the Olympic Games.

The inability of most sports federations to honour qualifying championships have eventually led to the crashing out of many Nigerian federations from the August 2016 Olympics Games.

The FCT Chapter of SWAN, after an exhaustive monthly congress held on March 11, 2016 urged President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) to hasten to release money for Nigeria’s preparation towards Rio 2016 as the country’s athletes are capable of winning medals at the Games, if there is adequate preparation. It also appealed to the President to beam his anti-corruption searchlight on the sports sector by investigating how the money that was disbursed for the All Africa Games in Congo in 2015 and Olympics games preparation was expended, insisting that the Ministry of Youth and Sports should account for the N2.7 billion released by government last year for the All Africa Games participation in addition to the preparation of athletes for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

It also charged the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung to present and implement his blueprint for sports development, rather than grandstanding and gallivanting all over the world in the name of inspecting sports facilities.

The body noted that government should have leveraged on the success of Team Nigeria at the last AAG which was a deliberate, corporate-driven initiative, geared towards generating fund that also ensured the money released was used on funding local and foreign training tours for athletes ahead of major international sporting events.
