Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet is excited by what Hakim Ziyech will bring to Stamford Bridge.
The Morocco international will officially join the Blues at the end of the 2019/20 season, after Chelsea agreed to pay Ajax Amsterdam a reported £37 million for the 27-year-old’s services earlier this year.
In an interview with Goal, Poyet warned that Ziyech will need time to settle in with the Blues, but he’s excited for what the creative midfielder will achieve in his time as a Chelsea player.
Ziyech has scored 48 goals in 165 appearances for Ajax while racking up an incredible 82 assists for the Dutch club.
“I thought last year he was outstanding, every time he got the ball you thought something would happen with creating chances and scoring goals,” Poyet told Goal. “He is more individual than I was!
“He is more direct but he always tries to affect the offensive play of the team which is exciting for people. When people go to watch football, they pay to watch teams win but also see something special.
He continued: “I think he is that kind of player to bring something to excite people in the stands to get people buying tickets. I was very surprised at the situation where he signs four days after January for next season.
A lot of Dutch players have struggled to adapt to the English Premier League over the last few years and former Ajax Amsterdam captain Davy Klaassen immediately jumps to mind, but Poyet is confident Ziyech can live up to expectations if he adjusts quickly.
“Now we can go through 20 names of players that perform at an incredible level in Holland with a few playing very well in England but the majority didn’t. It depends on how quickly he adapts to football and life in England,” Poyet concluded. (African Football)
