Enyimba International are through to the next round of the CAF Champions League preliminary stages after a 2-0 win over Vipers SC at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium Port Harcourt Sunday evening.
NPFL’s record goalscorer, Mfon Udoh scored a goal in each half to break the resistance of a spirited Vipers side who looked determined to defend a 1-0 lead form the first leg a fortnight ago.
Udoh, who was making his first competitive start of the season, fashioned Enyimba’s first real chance of the game in the 13th minute when he was brought down at the edge of the Vipers area but Joseph Osadiaye failed to beat the visiting goalkeeper. The Aba giants kept dominating play but a sturdy Vipers backline restricted them to harmlessly passing around the box.
The breakthrough however came just at the half hour mark when a neat combination between Chukwude and Ibenegbu saw the latter surge into the Vipers area only to be brought down by Wadada Wakiriko. Mfon Udoh stepped up and sent James Alitho the other way from the resultant penalty to hand Enyimba the lead.
Buoyed by the opener Enyimba came close to a second. Joseph Osadiaye freed Peter Onyekachi but the striker’s effort was weak and straight at Alitho. Osadiaye soon got his chance just before the break but after ghosting past three defenders, he got disposed by Mukisa before he could pull the trigger.
The visitors had a chance to level just after the restart but Deus hit a 25 yard freekick straight at the Enyimba wall. It proved costly as Enyimba doubled their lead with their next attack. Chukwude escaped down the right and fired into the Vipers area. Alitho’s save hit a defender and fell to an unmarked Udoh who back heeled home.
The Ugandan Champions nearly got an invaluable away goal when goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai flapped a corner-kick floated into the Enyimba area but no white shirts were around the vital area to apply the finish. The impressive Chukwude came close to a third for Enyimba when he was sent through by Udoh in the closing stages but Alitho was quickly off his line to clear. © supersport.com
