Heartland Queens are expected to kick off their title-chasing campaign for the 2019/2020 Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) with a short visit to neighbours, Ibom Angels.
The NWPL Matchday 1 matchup will hold on Wednesday, March 18, at the ‘Nest of Champions’, Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
At the colourful draw ceremony on Tuesday, 18/2/2020, in Benin City the Imo State darling team were drawn in Group B together with perennial champions Rivers Angels, Ibom Angels, Osun Babes, FC Robo Queens, Delta Queens, Adamawa Queens and newcomers Royal Queens.
The NWPL season will kick off on Wednesday, March 18, to be concluded on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 on an abridged format of two groups with eight teams each.
The two top teams in each group will qualify automatically for the NWPL Super 4 championship while the bottom teams from the groups will be relegated to the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) second tier league – Pro-league.
Heartland Queens Chairman Tessy Nwoke assured that the Owerri side will be the team to beat in the up-coming season.
“Of course, our group is okay same as the other group, I’m not sure anybody expected a cheap group.
“Of course, everyone knows there is no pushover team in the Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL).
“We are satisfied with our group and I’m confident Heartland Queens will compete favourably for glory in the group.
“Now that our work has been well cut out we must move faster than what we have been doing previously to get the team ready and in good shape for the commencement of the league.
“We plead that all hands must be on deck to ensure that the team truly fly the state banner high this time around,” said Nwoke.
Heartland Queens finished third in Group B of the immediate past abridged league format season.
Group A has top-flight returnees, Pelican Stars, Nasarawa Amazons, Sunshine Queens, Abia Angels, Confluence Queens, Dream Star Ladies, Edo Queens and champions, Bayelsa Queens.
