Egypt recalls legendary goalkeeper for AFCON qualifiers against Nigeria

Legendary Essam El-Hadary has been recalled by coach Hector Cuper to the Egypt side that will play next month’s double Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Nigeria.

The 43-year-old had been out of the Pharaohs since 2013 when he played in a World Cup qualifier under Bob Bradley.

The goalkeeper capped 148 times by the seven-time African champions has been in impressive for Wadi Degla in the Egyptian topflight. He has won four Africa Cup of Nations title with his country and was named the best goalkeeper at the 2006, 2008 and 2010 editions.

Cuper announced his squad of 24 local based invitees for the double-header against Nigeria on Saturday afternoon with the inclusion of several impressive players that include Zamalek’s Omar Gaber, Al Ahly’s Saleh Gomaa and Al Masry forward Ahmed Raouf.

However, the squad list witnessed the absence of Zamalek duo Ayman Hefny and Mahmoud Kahraba.

The Pharaohs will face Burkina Faso in an international friendly on February 27 before heading for Nigeria for their make or break AFCON qualifier against the Super Eagles.

Egypt, who have failed to qualify for the last three editions of the African football showpiece lead Group G with six points from two games.

Goalkeepers: Ahmed El-Shennawy (Zamalek), Mohamed El-Shennawy (Petrojet), Essam El-Hadary (Wadi Degla).

Defenders: Ramy Rabiaa, Ahmed Hegazy, Sabry Raheel, Mohamed Hany (Al Ahly), Ali Gabr, Hazem Emam, Hamada Tolba, Ahmed Dewidar, Omar Gaber(Zamalek).

Midfielders: Mostafa Fathi (Zamalek), Saleh Gomaa, Ramadan Sobhy, Momen Zakaria, Abdallah El-Said, Hossam Ghaly (Al Ahly), Ibrahim Salah (Smouha), Nour El-Sayed (ENPPI).

Forwards: Bassem Morsi (Zamalek), Amr Gamal (Al Ahly), Ahmed Raouf (Al-Masry), Marwan Mohsen (Ismaily).
