The likes of Victor Moses, Isaac Success, Orji Okoronkwo and Ederson Echiejile, all successful professional footballers, emerged into the spotlight after taking part in many grassroots tournaments in Benin City, Edo State.
A city replete with young, gifted talents, Benin City continues to beckon on sports lovers to invest their time and money to tap into the vast talent pool of raw youngsters in order to unearth the next big world star.
It is towards this goal that a philanthropist and entrepreneur, Mr Julius Aguebor, is sponsoring a football tournament called Jun Cup for Under-16 and Under-12 boys which is currently hotting up at Arinze Primary School in Benin City.
Already, thrilling games have been going on and teams that are participating are those with a fine repertoire of good footballers and strong youth football traditions.
Dynamo Sports Foundation are one of the favourites in the competition. The club has steadily produced very good young players over the last few years, some of whom are making good progress as they centre into professional football.
Dynamo, owned by one of the most dedicated youth coaches in Edo State, Austin Ogieriakhi, play a high octane style of football and the young boys of the club are usually admired for their strong fitness level which gives them the platform to express themselves remarkably during games and competitions.
Another fine grassroots outfit are Aidia Sports Academy which is coached by Samuel Ogbuku, a young coach versed in the idea of playing beautiful passing football.
Aidia Sports have a slew of fantastic youngsters and alongside Dynamo, they have won a number of age-grade football competitions in and around Benin City.
These two clubs are teams to keep an eye on as the Jun competition reaches its crucial stages.
The final of the tournament comes up on the 8th of February in what is expected to be a colorful occasion at the Arinze Primary School.
A star prize of 200,000 naira is up for grabs for winners of the competitions while other mouthwatering prizes will be given to clubs and individual players who distinguish themselves in the course of the tournament.
