Mikel threatens Kanu’s UEFA Champions League appearances record

By Daily Sports on February 13, 2016

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel could claim the record for highest number of appearances by a Nigerian player in the UEFA Champions League if the Blues pass the quarter-final of the tournament this year.

The Nigerian international, with 56 appearances so far, is four games behind leader Nwankwo Kanu with 60.

Since he joined Chelsea in 2006, Mikel has always been part of the squad averaging 37 games per season in all competitions.

The 28-year-old has won all the major trophies in England and in Europe and also an Africa Cup of Nations medal in his name, making him one of the most decorated players in Africa.

And with the Champions League set to resume on February 16, the two-time Chelsea Young Footballer of the Year will have every opportunity to close the gap as they take on PSG in the round of 16.

Victory against PSG over two legs would see him get the chance of equaling Kanu’s record and potentially beating it this season.

Following the sack of Jose Mourinho in December 2015, the player has been one of Guus Hiddinks’ power houses, playing all 13 games for the team in full minutes and losing none.

In line of his performances on and off the pitch, the manager has described him as the midfielder that brings ‘balance’ to the team which makes him a dependable team player.
