College of Commerce Warri on Thursday defeated Zappa Mixed Secondary School Asaba, 2–1 to lift the 2019 Zenith Bank/Delta State Principals’ Cup at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State capital.
Earlier in the day Destiny Secondary School Ughelli clinched the third position after defeating Okotie-Eboh Grammar School Sapele by three unreplied goals.
In the final, Ime Ekemini scored a brace for College of Commerce by getting the curtain raiser in the 63rd minute of the keenly contested match while the second goal followed few minutes later.
Zappa Mixed Secondary School got a consolation goal in the 85th minute through a penalty kick which the referee awarded as a result of an infringement on a Zappa player in the 18-yard box.
Incidentally, Ime Ekemini emerged the highest goal scorer of the tournament with eight goals as well as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Honourable Felix Anirah ensured that the highest goal scorer got a surprise gift of N100,000.
College of Commerce, Warri went home with a brand new 18-seater bus and N1 million cash as the champions, while Zappa Mixed Secondary School received N750,000, Destiny Secondary School got N500,000 and Okotie-Eboh Eboh Grammar was consoled with N100,000.
In his remarks, the State Governor, Dr (Senator) Ifeanyi Okowa urged Deltans to help develop the economy of the state by supporting sporting activities in the state.
He said that his administration in partnership with Zenith Bank is trying to reinvent the competition, noting that competitions of this nature had not taken place in the schools for a long time just as he reeled out his experience when he participated in school sports while growing up.
The Governor expressed the hope that every single institution would participate in the competition, saying that the 612 schools that registered for the competition shows a high level of excitement and raw talents that would be fished out in the course of the competition.
“My duty is to talk to well-endowed Deltans to help in the sponsorship of sports as a support for the children, because the more we support them, the better for us as a state.
“The important thing is that we discover the budding talents and be able to develop them.
At every sports competition, we had done well. I am happy with the level of competition I have seen this year. Thanks to the sponsors and all present,” Okowa said.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Delta State Football Association, Edema Fuludu, who was at stadium, has sent a letter of congratulations to College of Commerce for emerging champions of the 4th Zenith Bank Delta State Principals’ Cup.
“I’m so happy for my former school winning the Principals Cup after many years. This is the school that made me in football; now these young boys have put the school name on the world map.
“On behalf of other ex-students who came out to support the team, I thank the players and coach for making us proud. College of Commerce home of sports,” Edema wrote.
