I have sadly become a one man riot squad or the odd voice, in the supposedly but obviously ironical beat with egg heads that would move mountains if bribery and corruption have not eaten deep into the very fabric of its foundation.
This menace has ravaged and forced down on its knees, the once vibrant Lagos sporting press, which once upon a time held more visible, powerful and influential individuals, that either administered sports as Ministers or in other capacities, including Federation Presidents.
In the present era, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) is heavily polarized both at the national and state levels. The already worst and compounded situation have been nailed by the not well-defined roles and the who and who that belongs to the cabal and money extorting Sports Editors Forum, that goes about hijacking what belongs to the rest of sports journalists in the country. If you like, you can read this well-intentioned piece upside down and as usual, call me names.
I am never bordered but the truth must be told. The so-called few gangsters have as usual hijacked the Sports Minister, Sunday Dare and the Minister himself has been doing coded business like his immediate predecessor, the very pretender, Solomon Dalung that left a lot of mess behind.
The implication of this style of administration is worrisome. My worry is that sports should be an open business, instead of the present closed shop approach that Dare has wrongly embraced. It was the Guild of Sports Editors that misguided Dalung and he ended up leaving behind much deceit and pitiable abandoned projects, quarrels, etc, that helped to nail Nigeria’s performance at competitive levels which Dare is presently grappling with. The fact remains that Dalung was a monumental failure because of his alleged chase for kickbacks from especially the NFF and some other juicy sports federations like AFN and this also brings to mind the IAAF fund.
Many things are going wrong in an administration that claims even to high heavens that it is above board. Under its nose, the Muhammadu Buhari’s government is witnessing unprecedented plundering of Nigeria’s commonwealth by a powerful few, with Tinubu, Oshiomole, Lai Mohammed, El-Rufai, the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives, Governors of Kano, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, etc, applauding sheepishly. This is in spite of the obvious bitter pills that Buhari and the cabals have been administering on Nigerians that left many as walking corpses.
History will surely vindicate the just and judge harshly these pretenders that are holding the entire citizenry down. This renewed lies from Lai Mohammed and his paymasters are worrisome and all the facets of the nation are affected. You can bear me out that sports have been inflicted badly. Our teams have been posting woeful results. Golden Eaglets, a team with great pedigree in that category of the World Cup was booted out by Holland via the same error the team displayed in her very first group game against Hungary.
The so-called coach Manu Garba, who has reached his limit as coach of the team showed that he cannot absorb new techniques and tactics on the computerised like game of football in this century. NFF has, as usual, has issued a strong-worded statement after the ouster, yet it remains nothing than all motion and no movement.
As if the woes are not ready to abate, the U-23 Eagles who are the defending champs lost its first group match to arch-rivals, Cote d Ivoire. It is the way we are and the circle is nearing completion. Nigeria, unfortunately, prefers to use her third and fourth sons instead of the first and best in national assignments because of so many prejudices, which has retarded the development of the country. This has been the bane of this nation especially when self-centred tribalists head the country or agencies. You can see what is happening in the country today, where Buhari, with disregard to the provisions of the constitution and Federal Character principle which was adopted because of his people, chose his friends and family, from the northern part of the country to without any remorse occupy sensitive positions in our national life.
That is exactly what Amaju Pinnick has done with the employment of coaches for various national teams. You may not have forgotten in a hurry, one lame-duck coach named Paul Aigbogun, an obviously failed coach for the Flying Eagles and now Imama for the U- 23 Eagles. Haba!
Same last week, the Federal government withdrew her case against the foursome executive committee members of the NFF. In short Amaju Pinnick and his partners, Seyi Akinwunmi, Shehu Dikko and Ahmed Fresh were told by the Court to go home, that nothing corruption or stealing of government money against them was established. I don’t know if there is a lesson learnt in this case against Amaju Pinnick and gang.
It may be right to say that the false alarm against these people; it does not matter whether you like their faces or not, left much to be desired. It is only in this country that you see this kind of falsehood preferred against people, up to the court of law and shamelessly, Lawyers, because of the huge sum of money always associated with such cases, take it up to argue or try to prove what does not exist.
This is what goes on here. A government, especially Buhari’s government, is known for this nonsense and has been going away with it until this. It leaves a sour taste in the mouth and because Buhari’s history has been synonymous with impunity, it remains primitive and unacceptable to the civilised world. He must be told in clearer language that he understands that Nigeria and her people are sick and tired with his undemocratic behaviours and acts so far. Buhari is autocratic and adamant to the warning. He takes delight in disobeying court orders and that is never arguable. We have all seen how Buhari is going about his window dressing corruption ‘crusade’.
See the drama going on in the office of the Vice President and the allegation by Mrs Mariam Uwais. The Presidency through Garba has been battling to panel beat the damage and corruption that Buhari has been concealing, including Adams Oshinmole’s corrupt case. This is the fraudulent government that Buhari is presiding over and yet claims saint status.
Nigeria, Nigeria, Nigeria, where government swims in propaganda than reeling out facts and figures.
Come Wednesday, inside the main bowl of Akwa Ibom State Stadium, Nigeria will tackle Niger Republic in the group’s opening AFCON qualification games. On paper, it may look easy go but football has greatly transformed and anything can happen if the Eagles take their day’s opponent for granted.
In my thinking, it won’t be an easy go for Nigeria, however, the only true way out for Rohr and his boys would be to see the opponent of the day as a great football nation and get this minnow off the way in the first leg.
Nothing much to add than that vigilance should be the watchword for this AFCON first leg match in Akwa Ibom. There should be full concentration as if it is a game against Germany or their likes. No lawlessness, period. As we count down, join us on our social media handles; Keep shooting hard till next week!!
