Striker Uche Epete is enjoying a successful first season in the Mozambican league following his move to top side Ferovario Maputo, scoring good goals that have lifted the fortunes of the club.
On Sunday afternoon, the 20-year old aggressive attacker was on the score sheet, powering home a shot against TextAfrica in the Taca De Mozambique (equivalent to the FA Cup) to help Ferovario secure a draw in the return leg of the semi-final fixture.
The first leg at Ferovario’s home ground had ended 1-1 some months ago. With Sunday’s game also ending 1 goal apiece, the match went into penalties and Ferovario triumphed.
Epete was a thorn in the flesh of TextAfrica throughout the game as his tireless running and strength gradually wore down the opponent’s defence. He consequently wom the Man of the Match award after the game.
If Ferovario wins the final game then they will feature in the CAF Confederations Cup next season.
Epete, who grew up in Benin City, fits the bill of the strong African striker of the Didier Drogba mould. With the qualities of fierce shots, strong hold up play, good balance while pacing with the ball and an ability to always find the back of the net that Uche possesses, Ferovario and would not have looked out of place in Nigeria’s under-23 team.
Ekpete is a young, tall and aggressive striker with a knack for scoring goals with relative ease. He had been part of a formidable BJ Foundation youth team that stunned many by winning the Edo State FA Cup in 2015 and went as far as the quarter finals of the Federations Cup that year, beating then NPFL team Heartland of Owerri 3-1 in the process before losing narrowly 1-2 to another NPFL side Lobi Stars.
For many who have been fascinated watching 19-year-old Ekpete waltzing through defenses of big teams, taking the defenders to the cleaners and profitting from his great athletism to bang in goals with assured ferocity against top teams in recent years, it was not a matter of if but when Ekpete would turn pro and get his career up a notch. This he did earlier this year when he joined Ferovario. Now the striker sets his sights on Europe and with his blistering form in Mozambique and his obvious talents, it would be hard to bet against him being a success in the more established leagues of European football.
