It was a befitting send-off for the departed former Bendel Insurance FC Chairman, Chief Oyuki Obaseki, in Benin as some ex-football stars and administrators honoured him with a novelty match yesterday, Wednesday, October 15, 2019.
In the exciting game, the Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, scored twice in both halves to help Ex-Insurance beat the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) selected side 3-1. Darlington Obaseki scored the second goal for the Insurance side through Philip Shaibu’s assist.
Mandela Obaseki, who was up and doing for the selected side, was rewarded for his efforts two minutes to the final whistle with a brilliant touch to reduce the deficit.
Speaking after the game, the Insurance FC greats captain, Comrade Philip Shaibu, said he was happy to score in the game which brought great sons of Edo and Delta with friends of Obaseki family together in honour of the late football administrator.
Shaibu said: “I am happy to be a part of this event. He was our legend and football icon. For all of us that have played this round leather, we celebrate him because he contributed immensely to the development of football in Nigeria.
“He made Nigeria to be known in the map of the world in terms of the round leather object, and his policies are still living even after his death. Importantly, he is from Edo State and he is already being celebrated worldwide.
“If you watched SuperSport last week, you would have seen that the celebration has already started.
“It is a celebration of a life well spent and he has contributed immensely to the development of football in Nigeria and Africa. So, for us in Edo, it is our duty not just to compliment him but to also celebrate our own, Chief Oyuki Obaseki, and bid him farewell.
“He will surely be remembered for developing football and for raising Nigeria football through policy.”
