The just-concluded Governor Ifeanyi Okowa Pre-Season Tournament held in Asaba, the Delta State capital, lived up to expectation, the State Commissioner for Information, Hon. Aniagwu Charles Ehiedu, has said. He gave the verdict while speaking with journalists during the closing ceremonies on Thursday, September 19, 2019.
The former AIT presenter of “Political Platform” fame said: “Let me appreciate all the footballers at the tournament. As for this particular sports event, of course, as it is called, it is a pre-season tournament and we believe it will be able to develop our footballers who will now perform better when the season kicks off proper. The tournament has lived up to what we expected.”
Continuing, he commissioner said: “What is most important is that what is happening here is in line with our belief that when you are able to put investments in sports, you discover talents and that helps to contribute to the standard of living and this is what we are known for in Delta State.
“The reason of organising a great pre-season tournament like this is to show our love for sports and we take sports very seriously in Delta State.
“You have seen the Stephen Keshi Stadium what we have done with it. Our Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, believes that investment in sports helps to keep people healthy and he believes that with sports, we will be able to conquer the world.
“Sports can bring peace and harmony to our Communities and we’ll be able to boost the economy of our people as well and we believe that with sports, we can keep the youths out of crime and criminality.
“With what is happening here. Even if our teams is not among the teams competing in the finals were impressed that we have brought Nigerians to come and benefit from the hospitality Delta State is known for.
“You see everyone is happy, no-one is fighting any one, we are able to market what we are to the world and we are impressed by the performance so far.
“We believe that going forward this pre-season tournament will help us produce more talents and have more robust participation.”
