Midfield battler Moses Kalu is currently turning heads in the Czech Republic and the young Nigerian is one name to watch as he comes through the ranks of the youth team of Sk Dynamo Ceske Budejovice.
Kalu left the shores of Nigeria early this year, transferring from Bendel Insurance, then of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), to SK Dynamo.
The idea behind the move was to develop the 19-year-old further into being a better top class midfielder and that idea is going smoothly according to plan.
Today, Kalu is a regular in the heart of the midfield of SK Dynamo youth team who compete in the fourth tier of the Czech league where his high work rate, exceptional strength, powerful shots and overall discipline are standing him out.
The departure of Kalu was a dent in the Bendel Insurance midfield as the club badly struggled to replace the bundle of energy he brought to the club. Insurance later suffered the ignominy of relegation straight back to the second tier NNL from where they were promoted last year.
Though leaving Insurance was a tough decision for Kalu, who was a fans favourite in Benin City, career progression is an important thing for every player and he had to make a move as SK Dynamo beckoned.
The experience in Czech Republic so far has been largely a rich one for Kalu, popularly known as Mosenge in Benin City. He has featured regularly in the Dynamo’s last five games, winning four matches and losing one with the club.
In their last game some days ago, Kalu was on the scoresheet, hammering home a penalty.
“The experience here has been great. The club have been doing their best to give me the right environment and opportunities to showcase myself and improve as well. I have the confidence of my teammates and especially my coach Petr Skala and that is very vital for me,” Kalu says.
What does Kalu think of his chances of making it to the senior side playing in the first division quickly? Not a few who have seen him play believe he’s ripe enough to get a crack at the first team of a top club already.
“I just believe with time I will have opportunity to play in the first team and am ever ready anytime they call me to join the first team,” he says.
Judging from the appreciation and admiration he is drawing on a regular basis from the fans in the Czech Republic, that time may not be far away.
“Yeah, I have fans everywhere in my city and the fans all like me. They always call out to me when they see me. I feel really appreciated when they request to snap photographs with me and to have me sign autographs for them,” he says.
One fan of his calls Kalu “Iron Man”. He says: “He’s so strong. He is like N’golo Kante. The way he covers ground all over the pitch is remarkable and his bullets can scare any goalkeeper.”
Kalu is managed by Super agent Darlington Eseosa Ogbeifun. He is an indefatigable Nigerian football intermediary whose eye for spotting excellent talents and strong negotiation skills have ensured that players in his stable get good deals that offer them a path to high levels of professional football.
