Ibenegbu Bids Enyimba, Fans Goodbye •His Moving Letter

By Anthony Obaseki on August 2, 2019

Enyimba International FC midfielder Ibenegbu Ikechukwu has bidden the club and its fans goodbye after four years with the Aba clubside.

Last week, Ibenegbu signed a contract with another Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) giant, Rangers International FC of Enugu.

He was a mainstay of the Enyimba squad that reached the CAF Champions League group stage in 2016, qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup in 2017 with his iconic free kick goals, the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final in 2018 and the NPFL crown in 2019.

In total, Ibenegbu played over 100 times for Enyimba, scoring 25 goals.

Ahead of his departure, the Nigerian international wrote a moving letter to Enyimba fans

THE FULL LETTER

To my Enyimba family,

After 6 years (including my previous two with the club), 100 plus appearances and two league trophies and a super four trophy, it is time to say goodbye.

Where do I begin? I joined Enyimba as a 19-year-old kid from El Kanemi Warriors where I won the league's highest goalscorer in 2006, making my debut in the Super four Cup which we won. I say goodbye as a champion of Nigeria Professional Football League and a WINNER.

To play in the Nigeria Professional Football League, one of the best league in the Africa, is every professional player’s ambition. But to play for Enyimba, to become part of the Enyimba family, to work with some of the best managers and players in Africa, has truly been an honour.

Every achievement I have been part of in my time at Enyimba holds a special memory: The nail-biting end of the 2007/08 season – securing the title on the last day is one I will never forget.

Then there was Agege. We were desperate to make up for the disappointment of the 2018 season where the league ended with just 14 matches to go and then losing out to Raja Casablanca in the Confederation cup semifinal, but we decided that this season, we are going to give it all our best and bring the title back to Aba for you all our wonderful fans.  it seemed that once more luck was against us. But that night, with elephants on our chest and the fans behind us, we fought. Stanley Dimgba, Abdulrahaman Bolakale Bashir, Reuben Bala hit the ground running with goals, the rest as they say is history, and to date we’re still proudly the only team in Nigeria with a eight league titles and every other cups available.

None of this would have been possible without the wider club’s support. To Mr Felix Anyansi-Agwu who is the club chairman, the club’s staff, coaches, physios, and to the managers I played under at Enyimba, I want to say thank you.

But my biggest thanks must go to the Elephants fans. You brought me into the Enyimba family, you sung my name, and were there with us every step of the way. Thanks to your support, on nights like in Agege, you made the impossible possible.

As you will know, I haven’t featured as much this season as I would have liked, and at my age, I still have many years in the game ahead of me. With this in mind, I feel now is the time to seek a new challenge. I’m delighted to be joining Rangers International FC in Enugu, and I look forward to helping Rangers Int’l continue to grow both on and off the pitch in the next few years.

To everyone at Enyimba – goodbye, and thank you. You will always be part of who I am, and I wish you the best of luck. I could not be happier to be saying goodbye with the club back where it belongs – top of the league.

Nzogbu! Nzogbu!
