Nigeria coach Thomas Dennerby believes there is still work to do on VAR after his side lost 3-0 to Germany in the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup.
The use of the technology has aroused debate at this tournament, and referee Yoshimi Yamashita referred to the video replays for Germany’s opener and then their penalty.
“There have been some strange situations of course,” said the Super Falcons coach. “There was one time in the first half when no-one knows what they were watching for, players looking at each other, coaches looking at each other.
“Goal-line technology is good for the game but I don’t think anyone has the final solution for VAR yet – but it did not affect our team.”
Alexandra Popp’s header gave Germany the lead in the 20th minute, and the goal was only allowed to stand after Yamashita decided Svenja Huth was not interfering in play while in an offside position.
Then, following another VAR check, the Japanese official awarded a penalty, having ruled that Evelyn Nwabuoku had fouled Lina Magull.
Sara Dabritz converted from the spot before Lea Schuller fired in a late third for the two-time champions.
Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg said: “Maybe we can speed up the whole process when VAR is used but if the time is needed we have to accept it.
“It was positive for us twice so maybe I’ll approach it in a positive way. But there were quite a lot of interruptions.”
Either Sweden or Canada stand between the two-time winners and a place in the semi-finals. (BBC)
