The Nigeria players Union, National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF) wants all debtor clubs to pay their players and coaches before the commencement of the 2016 football season.
NANPF made this clear in a statement signed by the General Secretary, Comrade Austin Popo, and issued Tuesday in Lagos. The union lamented that “several appeals made by the Players Union in past to the clubs to pay the players and coaches had not yielded any positive result.”
According to the statement, “The recent and ongoing protest by the players of Taraba United Football Club was only the climax of catalogues of so many others staged by players of most of the clubs participating in the Nigeria Professional Football League and the Nigeria National League. There is no doubt that the Players, the Union and the Players Status and Arbitration Committee have made huge sacrifice in ensuring that the 2014/2015 Football Season ended successfully without any kind disruption following the failures of the affected clubs to meet with the contractual obligations of their players and coaches.
“The Players Union hope that the decision to ban all debtor clubs from registration and sales of Players by the Arbitration Committee will be strictly adhered to and enforced by the relevant football authorities in the spirit of fairplay and justice.
“On our part, we will do everything possible in line with established Football and labour rules to protect the rights and interest of the players and coaches in ensuring that they get their entitlements before the commencement of the 2016 Football Season.
“Finally, the players Union think it is wisdom for the clubs participating in the CAF competitions that are owning to clear up their debts so that it doesn’t affect their participation.”
