Uruguay made short work of 10-man Ecuador in a 4-0 win to kick off their Copa America campaign atop Group C on Sunday in Belo Horizonte.
A pair of first-half golazos from Nicolas Lodeiro and Edinson Cavani set Uruguay on their way, before Luis Suarez scored his team’s third to send La Celeste to the dressing room with a comfortable lead.
Two of Uruguay’s goals came after Jose Quintero was sent off in the 24th minute for a sliding challenge on Lodeiro, with the match being held up for several minutes as the referee consulted VAR to determine whether the tackle warranted a red card.
Uruguay were never troubled by Ecuador in the second half and pressure on their shorthanded opponents led to a fourth goal when Arturo Mina redirected the ball into his own net to reach the final scoreline.
Uruguay face Japan next in the group stage on Thursday, while Ecuador take on Chile the following day. (ESPN)
