Its the off season in Europe and many foreign-based players of Nigerian origin are back in the country to relax and, as well, keep themselves in good shape.for resumption of their club football in Europe.
One player who is around town in Benin City is Goodness Ajayi, the sleek winger who plays his club football at Inter Zapresik in the top flight of the Croatian league.
Ajayi, (he is the elder brother of Watford striker Isaac Success) has wasted no time in getting down to business in building his fitness level by training intensely with grassroos club Osabu FC in the School Of Health football pitch in Benin City.
In a recent session with the club which involved a two-sided game, 24 year-old Ajayi was in dazzling form, showing his dribbling, pace, swerves and vision to the admiration of spectators. He distinguished himself among the grassroots players, causing his opponents defence to get a bitter taste of what the defenders in the Croatian league get on a weekly basis.
After the session Ajayi, on the invitation of Osabu FC coach Pius Ehigiator addressed the young players of the club an admonished them on the need fpr perseverance and prayers as they work towards turning professional players.
"Discipline is the key", began Ajayi. He narrated how he started out as a youth player and the many challenges they confronted him.
"It was tough for me and my brother,Isaac Success at the start. There were so many challenges.I remember my dad even threatened to arrest my youth coach then for featuring me in training and matches as he preferred I went to school."
"Then there was a tournament we participated in in the outskirts of Benin. There was gunshot from nowhere and it missed my head by whiskers."
Even though we won tournaments then, we got very little financial compensation."
"Then of course we were victims of fraudsters, many of whom promised to take us places at the start."
Ajayi insists that through it all, he kept his hunger and prayed a lot. He adviced the young players to do the same so they could stand a better chance of becoming successful proffessionals in the near future.

Nigerian Xavier Amaechi could force exit out of Arsenal and join Bayern says reports
There are reports emerging that young Nigerian winger Xavier Amaechi is unhappy at Arsenal and could be pushing for a move to German champions Bayern Munich.
Xavier Amaechi was reportedly displeased with Unai Emery’s decision to leave him out of Arsenal’s 23-man Europa League final squad last week and Football London believes that he is now looking to force a move away from The Emirates this summer.
An exciting left-footed winger who plays on the right of the attack, the 18-year-old is one of the most gifted young attackers in Arsenal’s squad. He scored four goals and produced five assists for Freddie Ljungberg’s U23 side last season and travelled to Baku as The Gunners prepared to face Chelsea in the Europa League final on Wednesday.
But Amaechi was reportedly left stunned when it emerged that he was the only player in Arsenal’s party who would not be included in the 23-man matchday squad.
And Football London reports that the teenager is increasingly unlikely to extend a contract that expires in 12 month’s time.
For every young player, playing at the top and in the main team of a big European club is an enticing prospect, and for Amaechi this is not different. Maybe a sit down chat with Emery could clarify where he stands with Arsenal but he must surely realise as well that it gets no easier at Bayern.
