SWAN resolves lingering crisis in Oyo chapter, gets govt. support

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has resolved the lingering crisis in its Oyo State branch, even as it also expressed readiness to partner the state in its vision, policies and programmes aimed at developing sports, given promises made on behalf of the administration by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Olalekan Alli.

At the end of the peace and reconciliation meeting held at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, Iyaganku, Oyo State, stakeholders agreed to work towards the progress and viability of the state chapter of SWAN, in addition to making sacrifices where necessary.

The resolution of the crisis followed the intervention of the national executive of the association, which set up a presidential committee led by South South vice-president, Honour Sirawoo, his South West counterpart, Muideen Adeleke and national ex-fficio member, Alloy Chukwuemeka as members.

The reconciliation meeting was attended by the Chairman, Oyo State Council of the NUJ, Gbenga Opadokun; South South Liaison Officer, Gabriel Nwanetanya, Oyo State SWAN chairman, Seun, Ajayi Obe and Rivers State secretary, Olalekan Ige.

In a communiqué issued after extensive deliberations, the meeting agreed, among other things, that fresh revalidation exercise be conducted. This was subsequently effected by the national officers. The communiqué co-signed by the trio of Sirawoo, Adeleke and Opadokun also urged the SWAN NEC to ensure total revalidation of membership across the country, using the Oyo state model as a template. It was further agreed that nomination for aspirants should be opened in preparation for a free and fair election to be held on or before December 15, 2015, based on the revalidated membership list.

The SWAN presidential committee had earlier exchanged pleasantries with Deputy Governor Otunba Moses Adeyemo and visited the Oyo State SSG, who was instrumental to the recent donation of a brand new bus to the state SWAN chapter.
