AFCON Qualifier: Okumagba Thumbs Up NFF, Eagles, Technical Crew for 100% Record •Calls for early preparations for Egypt 2019

National Chairman of Nigeria Eagles Football Supporters Club (NEFSC), Prince Vincent Okumagba, has congratulated everyone that contributed one way or the other to ensure Super Eagles’ qualification for the Africa Nations Cup (AFCON) football summit coming up in Egypt later in the year.

According to him, the team’s last qualifier match played in Asaba last Friday against Seychelles where the homers won 3-1 was a water shed as it gave Coach Gernot Rohr an opportunity to see what more players can do.

“It afforded each player to show off his potentials to the team as the side prepares for the Nations Cup. I will not say it was an easy game as there is no longer easy match now in African continent. I will say that there was no dull moment as both side tried as much as they could to ensure the fans were give value for their evening. Eagles drew the first blood and that was the tonic the visitors needed to come out gamely into the match,” Okumagba said.

The number one football supporter stressed that the defence of the visitors did a yeoman’s job as it checkmated the forays of the Super Eagles forwards. Okumagba noted that the former African champions relied on their experience to ensure their opponents were forced in total submission in a final qualification match that not only saw the Eagles topping the Group E table but also ensured it was a grand conclusion of their qualification campaign.

Okumagba further observed that the decision to play Ahmed Musa in the middle initially proved counter-productive as the game was becoming difficult. He said that “Musa is always more productive and restating from the wing and we saw it happen several matches of the national team.”

The NEFSC boss, who spoke with Daily Sports on telephone on Saturday, believes that with much more friendly matches before the championship the Super Eagles players would evolve more going into the tournament stronger, more coordinated and playing a compact football. He also said that the NFF would as usual line up both grade A and other friendlies for the side “as the 2019 AFCON would be tougher ever all pointing to dynamic nature of the sport.” He said that with depth preparations and concentration the Nigeria side as one of the ranking teams would not disappoint when the chips are down.

Okumagba pointed out that the Amaju Pinnick-led NFF has shown enough clout and support for the Eagles and her technical crew and one prays that the camp would be injury-free so that the real players would participate in the competition. He also thumbed up the Delta State Government “for posting that spectacular hosting” and believed that such would be repeated during Nigeria/Egypt much-talked-about friendly in few days’ time.

Okumagba commended the efforts of the supporters club members for their patriotism in ensuring that the Eagles got non-stop support as the drums and flutes were on from the start to even after the last blast of the referee’s whistle.
