Nigeria U-23 striker Taiwo Awoniyi has promised an improved performance when they face Egypt on Wednesday in their second group game at the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Senegal.
The Dream Team VI narrowly edged Mali 3-2 in their opening match on Sunday.
Two goals from Junior Ajayi and Usman Mohammed had given the Nigerian side a 3-0 first half lead, but the Malians came back strong, scoring two goals, and fighting tooth and nail for a third which they did not get eventually.
Reacting to the win, Awoniyi said that he is delighted that the team was able to hold on despite Mali’s second half onslaught.
“That’s football for you, but we thank God that we were able to hold on to our lead and secure the three points. By God’s grace, there will be an improved performance on Wednesday against Egypt,” he said.
If the Dream Team VI beats the Young Pharaohs of Egypt tonight – kick-off is 7pm Nigerian time – they will qualify for the semi-finals.
