Shorunmu Canvasses Friendly Tests for Eagles’ Goalkeepers

By Daily Sports on February 8, 2019

Former Super Eagles Goalkeepers’ Trainer, Ike Shorunmu has urged the senior national team coaches to create avenues to expose the team’s goal custodians to international match situations ahead of the 2019 African Nations Cup.

Noting that this year’s African Nations Cup in Egypt would be highly competitive and tough due to the increase in number of participants, the 2002 FIFA World Cup star enjoined the coaches to work on getting the goalkeepers in the right frame of mind before the competition.

Shorunmu advised the Super Eagles to expect tough opponents in Egypt just as was the case at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, while urging the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ensure good preparation for the team.

“The goalkeepers that will be selected for 2019 Nations Cup in Egypt should be allowed to get equal playing time in the tune of matches.

“The four goalkeepers, Daniel Akpeyi, Francis Uzoho, Theophilus Afelokhai and Ikechukwu Ezenwa are good enough to fight for the number one shirt ahead of the African championship.

“I don’t think there is any goalkeeper better than four of them now. They should be made to understand World Cup is different from African football. They need to be more businesslike,” he said. (Guardian)
