The Classic Games Director, Macaulay Maduwuba, has revealed that the Games will get a new date in the first quarter of this year.
The Classic Games was scheduled to hold in December 2018 but was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
The Planning and Organising Committee had announced that time timeframe did not allow for conclusion on discussions with interested sponsors, but Mr. Maduwuba said in a statement issued over the weekend that the committee is leaving no stone unturned in a bid to ensure that The Classic Games 2019 is a huge success.
He said: “We want to first welcome everyone – participants, enthusiasts, players in the Chess, Darts, Draught and Scrabble community – to the new year, 2019.
“We appreciate you all for the understanding, patience and cooperation toward us since it was announced that The Classic Games would be deferred from 2018 to 2019.
“The reasons behind the postponement are being worked on for an absolute resolution so we can enjoy the best of mind and brain games in Chess, Darts, Draught and Scrabble in The Classic Games.
“New prospective sponsors have been identified and discussions are to begin in the coming days.
“All other issues concerning players’ mobility, accommodation and lodging are also being sorted. We do not expect huge challenges in this area as the season is just beginning.”
Maduwuba assured that the new date will be announced once the issues are resolved, most importantly, sponsorship.
“Registration remains suspended until the outlook of a resolution becomes clear. And this is expected to happen within the first quarter of the year, January to March,” he said.
On the tournament finally holding, the committee assured that will be no cancellation as it does not consider forfeiture as an option.
