Governor Okowa pledges to further develop sports through grassroots participation

Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has reassured Deltans that his administration will continue to create the enabling environment for the development of sports in the state through encouraging and harnessing grassroots talents.

While witnessing the grand finale of the annual Owa-Alero football competition, which took place at Iroro Primary School field, Owa-Alero in Ika North-East Local Government Area, on Wednesday, January 1, 2019, Governor Okowa, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information, Ogbueshi Patrick Ukah, commended the participating teams for the spirit of sportsmanship exhibited throughout the competition.

Presenting the trophy to Warri 2 Team, who defeated Home Based Team on penalties after a barren draw, Governor Okowa congratulated those who may not have had the opportunity to lift the cup in the just concluded edition and charged them to brace up for a better tomorrow.

He commended the organisers of the tournament for their initiatives in organising the tournament under a peaceful and conducive atmosphere, even as he hoped that beyond the general elections, his administration will continue to support the development of grassroot sports in the state.

Present at the ceremony were the State Chief Job Creation Officer, Prof. Eric Eboh, who presented medals to first runners-up, the Director of Protocol to the Governor, Hon. Ifeanyi Eboigbe, the sponsor of the second edition of the Competition, Mr. Donatus Aimufua, and other illustrious sons of the state.

In a chat with newsmen, one of the players, Johnson Erute, said he felt fulfilled to have lifted the trophy, even as he remained grateful to the sponsor of the championship, stressing that Governor Okowa should be given a second chance to consolidate on the good works he began in 2015.

Highlights of the keenly contested competition was the presentation of medals and trophy to deserving teams as well as musical performance by an indigene of the community based abroad in praise of Senator Okowa’s sterling leadership as Governor of Delta State.
