Ikpeba: Rohr Must Find Better Midfielders for Eagles

By Daily Sports on November 22, 2018

Former Super Eagles striker, Victor Nosa Ikpeba, is picking positives from Tuesday’s goalless draw between Nigeria and Uganda in an international friendly at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, but opined that the hosts’ boss, Gernot Rohr still needs to work on his squad. ‘The Prince of Monaco’ said Rohr will, in particular, have to look out for midfielders that will add both creativity and stability to sections behind attack and in front of defence, footballlive report.

Ikpeba urged Rohr to fortify his midfield before lining the Eagles out at AFCON 2019 in Cameroon, as he believes all other qualifies would be determined to win the title, which Nigeria last won at South Africa 2013.

The former Eko Hotel FC of Lagos, RC Liege of Belgium, AS Monaco of France and Borussia Dortmund of France forward predicted that the Eagles should be able to go far at AFCON 2019, if the midfield is plugged.

Ikpeba, though, reasoned that the Eagles might not be able to go beyond the semi-finals, as he believes Egypt, Mali, Senegal and Tunisia will be all out to stop Nigeria from a fourth continental title come June 2019.The 1997 African Footballer of The Year posited: “The transition of this team from the midfield to the attack remains the weakest link.

“We are not quick enough. If we get our transition right, we will be unbeatable in Cameroon.

“We will be a threat in Cameroon with the qualities we have, but we must be ready. Egypt, Mali, Senegal, Tunisia are there; they will be there to compete.

“We have to do well in Cameroon after missing out on two editions. (But) winning the AFCON will be difficult and I think the last four will be a good outing for the Super Eagles.” (Football live)
