Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) vice-president Andreu Subies was arrested on Tuesday as part of an investigation into alleged embezzlement, sources close to the investigation have said.
Subies was one of two people detained as part of Operation Soule, which began last summer and also led to the arrest in July last year of the RFEF's long-time former president Angel Maria Villar.
Searches were being carried out on Tuesday at the Catalan Football Federation, where Subies had been president since 2011 before leaving to join the RFEF under new president Luis Rubiales, who was elected in May following Villar’s removal in December following nearly three decades as head of Spanish football.
“The RFEF expresses the utmost respect for the legal actions, following the events that took place this morning,” the federation said in a statement.
“We want to highlight the necessary respect for the presumption of innocence.”
Sources said the searches had been extended to players insurance scheme Society of Spanish Footballers (MUPRESFE), which is also being investigated for embezzlement.
That alleged misappropriation of funds is believed to have benefited Subies and according to Spanish media Jose Contreras Arjona, another former leader of the Catalan Football Federation. (SuperSport)
