Caf have announced that VAR will be used in both the Caf Champions League and Confederation Cup finals in November and December respectively.
After VAR was first tested in the Caf Super Cup match between Wydad Casablanca and TP Mazembe, the refereeing technology returns for the inter-club competitions on the continent.
“This is a historic moment for African football.
It clearly shows that Caf is determined and committed to the inter-club competitions and will bring on board the latest and innovative technologies to make it better,” Caf secretary general Amr Fahmy told Cafonline.
“We (Caf) are the first confederation to use VAR in the final of the club competitions. We did it for the Caf Super Cup and we are delighted to go a step further with the inter-club competitions.”
Twelve elite referees and assistant referees are scheduled to undergo a preparatory course in Cairo later this month with International Football Association Board technical director David Elleray supervising them.
World Cup match officials Janny Sikazwe, Papa Bakary Gassama and Zakhele Siwela are some of those selected for the training and are already familiar with VAR.
