On Saturday September 25, 2018 was supposed to be his free day from work in his facilities management company in Dubai, UAE. A day in which he usually went out to play football and spend some leisure time.
But on the Saturday, while doing what he loved - playing football- a fatally freak accident took the life of 25-year old Kenyan Wilfred Nwamba Ondicho.
In a statement expressing grief over the sad passing issued by a friend Ochuko Enarievwe on behalf of friends and colleagues at Khansaheb facilities management company of Dubai where the deceased worked until his passing, the details of how the tragedy occurred was given.
The statement read:
Wilfred Nwamba Ondicho from Kenya, a Brother, Friend, and a hardworking colleague. A soccer lover and player who derived joy from playing soccer was gone too soon at age 25 in Dubai, UAE leaving his child and wife behind.
Wilfred on Saturday 22nd Sept 2018 in his usual manner had gone to play football with his friends. The playing ground was next to a sewage pond. While playing, the ball went into the pond. He then waded into the pond to retrieve the ball. In the process, Wilfred slipped. He couldn't swim. Unfortunately he died in that tragic circumstance.
May God bless the family with the strength and courage to bear the challenging days ahead. We are sending our deepest sympathies for the passing of your beloved son, husband, father and brother. He was a good man with a big heart. May you all take peace and comfort in knowing that God will not abandon you in your time of sorrow."
The incident has thrown the African community in the UAE in grief and there has been more outpouring of sympathy for the family of the deceased.
