The Nigeria World Cup jersey seems to be everywhere, literally, in as many households across the world, but for some odd reason the Country’s senior women’s national team aren’t feeling the buzz.
Nigeria’s FA launched the world cup kits in London in February with several national team players modelling the home and away kits at a low-key ceremony.
The jerseys sold out on the opening day sale in the Nike London store; the kits manufacturer had revealed it got 3 millions pre-orders before launch date.
In collaboration with the respective FAs, Nike launched the world cup kits of other partner countries, in style too.
The kits will also serve as the official uniform for the other cadres of the national team i.e France, England etc, but not in Nigeria.
Footballlive.ng gathered that the Super Falcons were not part of the deal for the kits and also had to wear the old designs for the three most recent games played since the new Nike kits were unveiled.
A player of the Super Falcons told footballlive.ng that on top of not getting new issued jerseys, training vests were of different array and not uniform.
‘We weren’t issued the new jerseys when we played recently. I have not seen or held it. Even during training players don’t have similar kits. There’s no uniformity,’ the Falcons explained.
In 2015, the Nigeria FA signed a three-and-half-year deal with the American sportswear company.
At the time, the NFF revealed that it would earn $3.75million during the partnership with Nike – and a $500,000 (₦99million) bonus if the Super Eagles qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia among other perks.
The contract was worth $750, 000 (₦148million) in its first year and due to rise to $1million (₦198million) each year from 2016 till 2018.
Nike was commissioned to design performance and training apparel, and equipment, including team kits and footballs, for the Nigerian national football team players at every level of the game. (Football live.ng)
