Ndidi reveals how he got the nickname Groundnut Boy

By Daily Sports on June 14, 2018

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has revealed how he used to earn money to buy his football boots back in Nigeria.

The 21-year-old grew up in Lagos and began playing with Nath Boys Academy, but he would earn money for his family and to pay for his kit by working as a street seller.

The City young player of the year admits he had to work hard to make ends meet for his family while maintaining his dream of earning a professional contract.

In an exclusive interview with ESPN ahead of the World Cup finals, which kick off tomorrow in Russia, Ndidi reveals he earned the nickname Groundnut Boy.

“I was a jack of all trades,” he said.

“I would go round selling different types of foods, like peppers, tomatoes and groundnuts (peanuts). I was actually known for selling groundnuts and sometimes they would call me Groundnut Boy.

“After I would finish selling I would go to do a quick one for myself, like wiping the glass of cars and if I could see I wasn’t making money quickly I would go and buy pure water and sell that. (Leicestercity.co.uk)
