Former Mike Tyson trainer-turned commentator Teddy Atlas had a stark warning for Anthony Joshua when discussing a Deontay Wilder fight on Sirius XM Boxing’s Radio show on Monday.
Atlas, who has a vast amount of experience of the heavyweight division, believes Joshua needs to go through the motions of his mandatory defenses and do everything in his power to avoid the big-hitting American.
Joshua currently has obligations to deal with against number one contenders Kubrat Pulev and Alexander Povetkin, but has instructed promoter Eddie Hearn to make an undisputed unification with Wilder.
Talks are at an advanced stage for a huge Las Vegas Pay-Per-View extravaganza at the end of 2018, although Atlas says the fight should be put on hold by the undefeated Briton.
Asked specifically if Joshua should be seeking out the Wilder bout, Atlas replied: “No … Wilder can do one thing. He can punch like a son of a gun!
“Why would you risk that if you can fight anybody?
“Joshua’s people should be arrested if they put him in there with him right now!
“Right now, they can make money fighting other guys. Maybe a year, two years down the road the fight becomes a bigger fight. Then you go and take that risk,” he added.
Part of Atlas’ reasoning would be recent fights where Joshua has looked vulnerable, but of which the same could be said about Wilder.
Both men hit hard and have suspect chins, which means the fans are in for a treat as whoever lands flush first will probably walk out with all the belts.
There’s also the potential for a rematch or even a trilogy in what will be the biggest top division battle staged in the United States since Lennox Lewis and Vitali Klitschko traded blows back in 2003.
