Man City end dream season with 100 points

By Daily Sports on May 14, 2018

Champions Manchester City finished the season on a record 100 points after Gabriel Jesus scored with almost the final touch against Southampton, who secured Premier League survival despite losing.

Southampton needed a point to make sure of safety but Swansea’s 2-1 home defeat by Stoke means Saints will play in the top flight for a seventh successive season.

A stunning season that started with a 2-0 win at Brighton on 12 August, ended with a last-gasp win for Pep Guardiola’s side, who finish 19 points ahead of nearest rivals Manchester United.

As well as hitting 100 points, City’s 32nd win broke Tottenham’s 57-year-old record for victories in a single top-flight campaign.

Rarely has City boss Pep Guardiola celebrated a goal like he did when Jesus’ exquisite 93rd-minute chipped finish hit the net.

With just seconds remaining of the three minutes additional time, the Brazil forward latched on to Kevin de Bruyne’s excellent floated cross over the top before beating Alex McCarthy after the Southampton keeper had rushed off his line.

It was virtually the final touch of a magnificent campaign which saw City end the season with a record 16 away wins and 106 Premier League goals.

Guardiola leapt out of his seat in the dugout to punch the air while Jesus whipped off his shirt in celebration in front of City’s delirious fans.

This was far from vintage City, though. They were frustrated for long spells but, nevertheless, their players were still on the pitch celebrating in front of their fans 20 minutes after the final whistle.

Teenagers Phil Foden and Brahim Diaz were sent on in the closing stages for their fifth league appearances of the season, ensuring they will both receive a title winners’ medal. (BBC)
