Nigeria battle Argentina, others at 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships

Nigeria’s men table tennis team have been drawn in Group F against Slovakia, Argentina, Turkey, Australia and Bulgaria at the 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships in Halmstad, Sweden, from April 29 to May 6.

The competition comprises the championship division, the second division and the third division. Nigeria are in the second division and would be aiming to gain promotion to the championship division, which has countries like China, Germany and Nigeria’s continental rivals Egypt.

The Nigerian team consists of veteran player Segun Toriola, Aruna Quadri, Olajide Omotayo and Bode Abiodun.

They take on Turkey in their first match on April 29 before playing Argentina on April 30. Nigeria play Slovakia on May 1 while they meet Bulgaria on May 2 and Australia on May 3.

Other countries in the second division – seeking promotion – are Chile, Denmark, Ukraine, Thailand, Holland, Canada, Spain, the United States, Iran, Puerto Rico, Italy, Hungary, Greece, Paraguay, Ecuador and Serbia.

Meanwhile, national coach Nosiru Bello believes the team can gain promotion at the end of the competition.

Nigeria failed to gain promotion at the end of the 2016 edition in Malaysia after failing to finish among the first 28 countries.

However, Bello told our correspondent that the achievement of the team at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, where they finished second, would motivate them to do better than their last outing. (Agency Reports)
