French club Le Havre have announced their defender Samba Diop has died at the age of 18.
The Ligue 2 outfit said the teenager, who played for the club's reserve team, died on Friday night.
“It is with enormous sadness that the members of the club have learnt of the death of its player Samba Diop,” Le Havre said on their website.
Diop was born in the Normandy city and last year helped the club’s under-19 side finish second in their national league. The club have given no indication of the circumstances of Diop’s death.
“This is a horrible moment for the men’s and women’s players, the football school through to the professional team, staff members and volunteers, administrative staff and directors,”' their statement continued.
“HAC (Le Havre) offers its most sincere condolences to Samba’s family.”
Le Havre’s first-team match against Reims was postponed on Saturday out of respect. French football league officials said a minute’s silence would be held before all games in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 this weekend to mark Diop’s death. (ESPN)
