Chelsea expect to appoint Massimiliano Allegri as Antonio Conte’s replacement in the summer, according to reports.
Despite winning the Premier League in his first season at Chelsea last year, Conte looks set to leave Stamford Bridge in a matter of months after a difficult campaign.
Having occupied a top-four spot for the majority of the season, the reigning champions have now slipped away and are eight points below Tottenham having lost three of their last four fixtures.
The club’s return to Europe also ended in disappointment as Conte’s side were emphatically beaten by Barcelona in the last-16 stage.
The Daily Star says Chelsea expect Allegri, Juventus’ 50-year-old manager, to be their next manager and actually wanted him before moving for Conte two years ago.
It is claimed Blues chief Marina Granovskaia has been working on a move for Luis Enrique this year but his lack of commitment has led the club to focus on Allegri.
Allegri signed a new contract at Juventus last summer and is one of the most highly-rated and respected coaches in Europe.
His Juventus side are four points clear at the top of Serie A and beat Tottenham at Wembley to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
They now look set to exit the competition, however, after being thrashed 3-0 by Real Madrid in the first leg of the clash in Italy. Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for Real.
Speaking earlier in the week, Allegri confirmed he would leave Italy once his reign in Turin comes to an end. ‘Certainly I will go abroad,’ he told The Telegraph. ‘In Italy, finished.’
Fifth-placed Chelsea face London rivals West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
