Manchester United announce pre-season tour of USA with friendly against Liverpool set for 107,000 ‘Big House’ in Michigan

Jose Mourinho is to take his Manchester United side back to the USA this summer – although plans to take on Liverpool across the Atlantic are still to be finalised.

The Premier League giants will spend two weeks stateside and will play MLS outfit San Jose Earthquakes and Mexican side Club America.

However, a fixture against their old rivals, which sources say is ‘more than likely’ to be played at Michigan’s 107,000 ‘Big House’, remains unscheduled.

United will start their trip by facing Club America at the 63,400 University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona on July 19.

They will then face the Earthquakes at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, the 68,500-capacity home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers a stone's throw away from San Jose’s Avaya Stadium, on July 22.

Their clash with Liverpool, part of the annual International Champions Cup, is set to take place after the above dates, subject to plans being finalised. United say that further details of additional games and venues will be announced soon.

This will be the fifth time United have travelled to the US since 2010. In 2014 they took on Real Madrid in front of 109,000 at the Big House, which has seen its capacity reduced since then. That figure is a record for a football match in the US.

As they were last year, United are expected to be based at UCLA. Mourinho is a big fan of the Los Angeles school’s Westwood campus and has also travelled there with Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

The famously meticulous Portuguese told the LA Times last year: “Since 2004, I am still searching for the first mistake. The first mistake never arrived. It’s amazing.”

United Executive Vice Chairman, Ed Woodward, welcomed the trip. “The tour is a central part of the team’s preparation for a long and intense campaign and this is the second consecutive year that we will travel to the US,” he said.

“The training facilities are world class and the games will be played in front of passionate crowds, making it an ideal environment for the players to gear up for the new season.

“The club, manager and team always receive a great welcome when visiting America, with our millions of US fans always keen to get closer to Manchester United.” (Daily Mail)
