Kwara United on Tuesday celebrated their U15 players and officials for their excellent display during the last edition of the NPFL/La Liga U15 tournament. The youngsters came second after Katsina United U15.

From indications, the awards were much anticipated, as the communities of Ilorin City, including parents of the players and football stakeholders, turned up in large numbers at the indoor Sports Hall of Kwara State Stadium, Ilorin to support this prestigious event.

Highly elated Kwara United Chairman, Prince Oladimeji Ladi Thompson, said: “The whole event is about the children, our future football stars. We are here to encourage, celebrate, elevate and empower them in their chosen career. The event is basically to award them for their hard work and scintillating performances that they have put in this year edition of the competition, we are proud of this crop of young players and their dedicated officials.”

The U15 players shook hands with the chairman of the occasion, Mallam Oke, permanent secretary, Ministry of Sports and Youths Development, the club chairman, Prince Thompson, Kwara FA Chairman, Mallam Idris Turaya, and other dignitaries before the runners-up medals and cash reward was presented.

The youngsters, who were dressed in their jerseys and casuals, were rewarded with cash for their outstanding performances in the tournament.

Seven of the boys were called to the National U17. Two of them are in the National U15, while four were promoted to the main team.

Kwara United chairman later displayed the runners up plaque received by the U15 La Liga players.  It would be recalled that for three years now, the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has partnered with La Liga to conduct clinics for youth coaches in Nigeria. Kwara United management sponsored Coach Sunny Ahamoje and Coach Olaniyi Mukaila for the coaching clinics in Abuja.

Managing Director of La Liga Nigeria, Javier Del Rio while accessing the partnership so far noted that from the success of the clinic, more professional footballers were going to be churned out by coaches in Nigeria in the near future.

According to Goal.com, the league is looking to set up a tournament for Under-15 players in Nigeria and selection of players who will be on their way to Europe will probably be done during the competition.

It is obvious that since the primary aim of the clinic is to expose coaches to the La Liga style of football, the players who will make it to Europe will certainly come face-to-face with the style and, hopefully, use it to advance in their careers. It is on record, that the ABS FC U15 won the last edition of the same tournament.
