A 33rd minute strike from substitute Austine Ogunye ensured Lobi Stars beat Akwa United 1-0 and took all three points in the rescheduled Matchday 9 fixture at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi on Wednesday.
Ogunye who came on for injured Thomas Adeshina in the 16th minute benefited from a not too pronounced assist from Aliassou Sanou who missed a chance off a corner kick only to see it fall on the feet of Ogunye who made the best of the opportunity to put the ball past Ojo Olorunleke in goal for Akwa united.
Before the goal Samad Kadiri missed a great chance when he failed to convert in the 32nd minute after finding himself with only the goalkeeper to beat but rather chose to place wrongly and the ball rolled out of touch for a goal kick to the Promise Keepers.
The fixture really never lived up to its pre-game hype as the home team played with much caution and Akwa United were simply a shadow of what they are known for when it comes to positive attacking football.
Akwa United assistant coach Aliu Zubairu blamed their loss on fatigue.
“It was a good game though we lost but both teams gave their best and officiating was good, the problem with my team was that we were tired going into this game having travelled from Gambia to Nigeria where we had to stop over in three countries,” Zubairu told www.npfl.ng.
“If you have watched Akwa United before now and compared with the game the team played today you will see that the boys were simply tired,” he stressed.
