Olympian escapes fire through window

Olympic gold medallist and UFC flyweight contender Henry Cejudo was left with burns after he was forced to flee from a California hotel as deadly wildfires engulfed areas of Santa Rosa, California earlier this week.

The fires have taken the lives of 17 people, with more than 150 people unaccounted for. The blaze has forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes in what’s being described as one of the deadliest fires in the state’s history.

Cejudo was part of a group of former US Olympians and American sport stars attending a special celebrity fundraising event held by former NFL star Ronnie Lott.

When the alarm was raised in the early hours of Monday morning guests at the event evacuated their respective hotels and fled to safety. During the chaos, Cejudo was forced to jump from a second-story balcony of the Fountaingrove Inn to escape the blaze.

Initial reports from the San Francisco Chronicle suggested Cejudo had sustained a broken ankle during his escape, but those reports have since been revised, with the UFC star sustaining burns to his right foot. He also lost his Olympic gold medal.

Cejudo is set to compete at UFC 218 on 2 December, where he’s scheduled to take on fellow flyweight contender Sergio Pettis in Detroit, Michigan.
