Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr says he will continue to use Chippa United's goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.
The South African-based net minder was between the sticks when Nigeria lost 2-0 to Bafana Bafana in their 2019 CAF African Cup of Nations qualifier in June.
Media reports in Nigeria report that the coach refused to lay the blame on the goalkeeper, insisting that the blame should be shared by the entire team.
Furthermore, Rohr said the recent appointment of a new goalkeeper trainer in Enrico Pionetti will no doubt help Akepyi and the entire team in solving the goalkeeper crisis since first choice Carl Ikeme was diagnosed with Leukaemia.
“He (Akpeyi) did well against Algeria, it was difficult for him against South Africa but the reason why we lost the game was not entirely his fault,” said Rohr to Owngoalnigeria.com“
It was the fault of all the team and we have now a second goalkeeper coach from Europe to help us work on the goalkeeping position.
“We know we must work very hard in that position. He (Akpeyi) is among the goalkeepers who can be a solution to us but we are also monitoring other goalkeepers."
The Super Eagles will meet the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in Uyo and Yaounde as they want to reach the FIFA World Cup in Russia next year
